Since 2004 we have been running SHAPE courses ( School HIV AIDS Peer
Educators ). Schools send 10 young people to receive training in
HIV/AIDS awareness, life skills, communication and team building. Each
course is 5 days long and is residential for groups travelling in from a
distance. All meals, accommodation and transport are provided by the
LINK in addition to full teaching manuals. The young people then return
to their schools to share what they have learnt with their classmates.
Since this programme began 600 young people have participated in these
courses and young people and teachers testify to the change that it has
made in their attitude and behaviour.
Recent Government restrictions on students attending extra mural
courses in term time have made running these courses difficult. So AIDS
awareness components relevant to different age groups are now included
in all LINK educational programmes.
