LEARNING FROM ONE ANOTHER
Visits to Lesotho by school groups prove to be
challenging and informative for pupils from both countries. Two Church
of England Academies, Venerable Bede in Sunderland and Ian Ramsey in
Stockton, make regular visits to their partner schools, St Stephen’s
High School, Mohale’s Hoek, and Boqate High School, Maseru. Over a two
week period pupils spend time in class with their Basotho counterparts,
and one reflected,” We made some great friends at the school and I was
surprised how similar students in Lesotho are to us in the UK”. Another
commented, “it was great hanging out with students from a different
country and they taught us some of their language”.
During their visit students from Durham help to run
weekend activity camps for child headed households. These experiences
can have a profound effect on pupils and staff alike. One student
remarked, “Seeing the children from the child headed households after
coming to the link centre for a break from looking after family was
amazing listening to them”.
